Warm, matte and textured. Travertine brings calm to a room where marble brings drama.
Travertine is a sedimentary limestone formed around mineral springs, and its character comes from the natural voids and linear banding left behind. It has had a long run in Australian interiors because it does something marble cannot: add warmth and texture without demanding to be the centre of attention.
How the block is sawn changes the stone completely. Vein-cut slabs show long linear banding and read contemporary and directional. Cross-cut slabs show cloudier, more circular figuring and read softer and more traditional. Decide which before you shortlist, because the two do not sit comfortably in the same room.
Travertine's natural voids can be filled with resin for a smoother, easier-to-clean surface, or left open for texture and grip. Filled slabs suit benchtops and interior floors. Unfilled and tumbled finishes suit outdoor paving and pool surrounds, where grip matters more than smoothness.
Floors, stairs and wall cladding across living areas; bathrooms and vanities with proper sealing; fireplace surrounds; and outdoor paving and pool surrounds in the right finish. It is softer and more porous than marble, so it is a considered choice for a hard-working kitchen benchtop.

It is one of the most common choices for Australian pool surrounds. Unfilled or tumbled finishes give grip, and travertine stays noticeably cooler underfoot than darker stone.
It is porous, so sealing matters. Sealed properly and cleaned with pH-neutral products, it holds up well. Blot spills rather than wiping them across the surface.
Filled voids can open up over years of wear, particularly on floors. They can be topped up. Unfilled travertine simply keeps its texture, which is often why it is chosen.
It can, in a filled and sealed finish, but it is softer and more acid-sensitive than marble. For a busy kitchen we would usually point you to dolomite, granite or the silica free engineered range instead.
