Best suited for
Where Roman Classico works.
- Floors, stairs, and cladding across living areas
- Bathrooms, vanities, and wet areas when correctly sealed
- Outdoor paving and pool surrounds in an unfilled or tumbled finish
- Feature walls and fireplace surrounds
Travertine is a sedimentary limestone formed around mineral springs, recognisable by its warm tone and linear texture. It reads softer and more matte than marble and brings warmth to a room rather than drama.
Worth knowing
Before you specify it.
- Travertine has natural voids. Filled slabs give a smoother surface; unfilled slabs keep more texture and grip.
- It is porous and acid-sensitive, so sealing matters more than with granite.
- Vein-cut and cross-cut slabs read very differently. Confirm the cut before ordering.
Natural stone is quarried, so veining, tone, and mineral movement differ from slab to slab and from batch to batch. Photographs show the direction of a material, not the exact slab you will receive. Always select from the slab itself in the showroom.
Care and maintenance
Looking after travertine.
- Seal on installation and reseal periodically, particularly in wet areas.
- Clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner and avoid acidic or abrasive products.
- Blot spills rather than wiping them across the surface.
- Check filled voids over time and have them topped up if they open up.
