Marble is a metamorphic stone prized for depth of veining and the way light sits on a polished surface. It is soft compared with granite and reactive to acid, which is what gives it the lived-in patina many people choose it for.
Worth knowing
Before you specify it.
- Acidic spills such as lemon, wine, and vinegar can etch a polished surface. A honed finish hides etching better than a polish.
- Marble is porous and should be sealed on installation and resealed periodically.
- It is softer than granite or engineered stone, so it marks more readily in a hard-working kitchen.
Natural stone is quarried, so veining, tone, and mineral movement differ from slab to slab and from batch to batch. Photographs show the direction of a material, not the exact slab you will receive. Always select from the slab itself in the showroom.
Care and maintenance
Looking after marble.
- Wipe spills promptly, especially anything acidic.
- Clean with warm water and a pH-neutral stone cleaner. Avoid bleach, vinegar, and general household sprays.
- Use boards and trivets rather than cutting or placing hot pans directly on the surface.
- Reseal on the schedule your fabricator recommends, typically every one to two years.
